CARBS. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!
Welcome to part 1 of Carbs; everything you need to know. Next week I’ll get into some more detail about carbs but this week I’ll just stick to some basics to make it easier for you to get your head around all this stuff.
CONFUSED ABOUT CARBS?
Are you confused with all the hype out there on what to eat and when? Carbs in the morning? No carbs after 3pm? Low carb? No carb? High GI? Low GI?
WHAT THE HECK DOES THAT ALL EVEN MEAN??
No wonder the majority of us are confused. But never fear, I have trawled through everything I could get my hands on and have even tested it on myself. So read on to get the basic facts on carbs and what it all really means.
CAVEMAN DID NOT EAT BREAD & PASTA
I’m not about to go all paleo on you here but think about it. The human body came into being long before pasta, rice and bread! That includes whole grain,wholemeal, multi grain, white, brown etc! And guess what? No one died because they couldn’t have that stuff! If you never eat any of these carbs again, you will NOT die or get sick! Ignore whatever you read that says otherwise. That great food pyramid we all grew up learning at school is good old B.S! Use your common sense. There is no known whole grain bread/pasta deficiency.
ALL CARBS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL
The truth is all carbs are not the same. Carbs are essentially sugars that enter our blood stream. There are 2 types; simple and complex. Complex take longer to digest and are also known to be low GI.
WHAT IS GLYCAEMIC INDEX?
GI refers to the glycaemic index where food rates with a number depending on how fast or slow the sugars get into your blood stream. These are mainly your vegetables. Everything else pretty much comes under simple and digests quickly entering your bloodstream before you know it. This includes fruit, pasta, bread, rice, biscuits, lollies, chocolates etc.
As you can see if you eat many vegetables everyday, you are getting ‘carbs’. You would be also eating all the fibre you need.
When I talk about low carb diet to lose weight, I mean staying away from all that other stuff. Even too much fruit will sabotage your efforts. In this day and age we have access to bananas in the middle of winter! Think about it! Is that natural?? We eat in such unnatural ways and expect our bodies to be healthy and fit. Processed carbs do not help when you are trying to lose weight!
It’s no coincidence that ‘natural carbs’ (veggies) are so low-calorie compared to pastas, biscuits, lollies, chocolates and bread!!
It’s a no brainer people! You do not HAVE to eat breads and pastas even if they’re whole grain and ‘healthy’ to be on a healthy diet! That’s it in a nutshell. You can get plenty of healthy fibre from vegetables! I know I know! We all want to eat all those other carbs! Yes and that’s why we all want to lose weight! The problem often is those yummy processed carbs just lead to wanting more and more! I like broccoli but eating it doesn’t make me want to eat more and more later on. I’m an m&m addict though!
