WHAT IS A KETOGENIC DIET?

 

The more you look around on the internet the more you come across a lot of information about nutrition and different types of diets. Just when you think you know everything about low carb, paleo, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free etc you come across ‘ketogenic diet’! Now what the heck is that all about? I start to feel like people are just making stuff up just to put online and confuse me!

 

Well stay tuned I’m about to break it down and explain it simply so you know exactly what a ketogenic diet is and figure out if its something you would want to try.

SHOULD YOU TAKE A PALEO DIET SERIOUSLY?

We’ve all heard of the paleo diet. There isn’t as much hype about it now as there has been but I believe it’s here to stay! If you thought it was just a fad think again!

A Paleo diet basically involves eating a diet of foods our ancestors would’ve eaten zillions of years ago. You can read some more here. The theory is that we haven’t genetically evolved much since cavemen roamed the earth so eating like one is still the best thing for our health. We are designed to eat a paleo diet! I really don’t know how it’s not glaringly obvious to everyone. There simply cannot be anything better than eating the way we humans first came into existence.

It is obvious, that during the last 5 or 6 decades people have become unhealthier, fatter and dying of many chronic illnesses despite advances in health care! There is clearly something not right with how we are eating. Our modern diet which often is high in processed food containing trans fats and sugar have had very harmful effects on our health. Obesity and related diseases are just increasing.

WHICH DIET TO CHOOSE?

Most people are aware that processed and fast foods aren’t good for general health or weight loss but most people are still confused about what then forms a healthy diet.  How about no diet? How about you eat what your body is designed to consume? And that my friends is a paleo diet. There was no ‘health pyramid’ being taught at cave school!

I don’t know that this works all that well for the vegetarians/vegans out there, but chances are you’d be dead if you were a caveman way back then. Can you imagine? The fight for survival meant eating whatever was available. That is meat and whatever other fruit and veggies they could find.  The  “no thanks, I’m vegetarian” would’ve most likely meant death of starvation!

The basics to the paleo diet are obviously meat and vegetables but legumes and grains are eliminated.  This is no doubt very confusing to people who have been raised with the ‘healthy pyramid’ philosophy! Proteins 

We should eat lean proteins which help support our muscles, and keeps the body from having high and low sugar/insulin spikes. Read more about protein here and carbs here and here.

Fruit and Veggies

It goes without saying. Fruit and vegetables are very good for us. Stick to what’s in season and eat it whole (caveman didn’t have a nutribullet)

Nuts and Seeds 

Again these are very good for us. Many have the healthy fats, including omega 3. They are high in calories though, so you can’t eat them all day and expect to lose a lot of weight. Better than eating potato chips though.

Processed Food

Legumes and Grains 

We have been led to believe these are good for us but are they? Legumes are known to be toxic and create digestion issues. If they are so good for us why are beans and other legumes so gas-producing? Think about that.

Beans and legumes came about as a way for the plant to protect itself from destruction. Meaning, animals will avoid eating it due to its toxicity.  They are high in toxins when raw and to a lesser extent when cooked. When I discovered this and stopped serving beans and peas to my kids I was the best mum! There are many vegetables that aren’t toxic, choose them!

In animal studies they cause damage to the intestinal tract and have been associated with autoimmune diseases and inflammation which may lead to atherosclerosis and cancer. Read more about  legumes and beans toxicity here.

Whole Grains 

Similar to beans and legumes in they affect our digestive tract ,causing inflammation and other issues. Also good to remember grains have changed dramatically since first harvested thousands of years ago. Many chemicals and processing goes into what you get at the supermarket.  The food industry controls a lot of what we are told is good for us. No-one can afford to tell us grains aren’t good for us. What do you think would happen to the grain industry? It is up to us to research and find the truth. Don’t take my word for it though. Do your own research, make your own mind up. For me it’s a no brainer!
