GARCINIA CAMBOGIA Myth or Miracle?
You may have heard of Garcinia Cambogia and wondered whether it was worth buying and whether it would actually help you lose weight. Well I thought I would give you a quick review of this product to give you a better idea about it.
This post follows on a little from the post I did on diet shakes. If you missed it, you can catch up on it here. I was cleaning out my pantry cupboards and came across this little gem! Garcinia Cambogia!Quite a while ago I had bought some of this supplement. I was trawling the internet, as you do, when this caught my attention. I had seen ads for it on TV and thought maybe THIS could be the answer to losing weight! It has been even mentioned on the Dr Oz show!

WHAT IS GARCINIA CAMBOGIA?
A quick google search will give you the following information:
Basically Garcinia Cambogia is a type of citrus fruit, commonly known to grow in Southeast Asia. Apparently it’s the extract from the rind, called hydroxycitric acid (HCA), that has it associated with weight loss.
Calcium, chromium, potassium, garcinia cambogia 50% HCA
The one I bought has ‘other ingredients’ listed on the bottle. These include gelatin, microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate.
Taking Garcinia Cambogia can make you feel full, and therefore reduce your appetite and make you eat less.
It can increase your metabolism, making you burn extra calories without even trying.
Also known to block fat production. Apparently it does this by blocking an enzyme that the body needs to make fat.
Improves blood sugar levels and cholesterol.
Enhances athletic performance.
The brand I bought, basically directed to take 2 capsules daily. It doesn’t specify time of the day, or with or without meals. I took it in the morning with breakfast because that was the easiest time to remember to take it.
Some of the side effects listed are: dizziness, dry mouth and digestive problems such as upset stomach and diarrhoea. It also could interact with other medications you may be on. These include medications for asthma and allergies, diabetes and insulin, iron for anaemia, pain killers, psychiatric drugs, cholesterol lowering drugs and blood thinners!
CONCLUSIONS FROM THE RESEARCH
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association which published a review of the research, don’t waste your time and money. This was pretty much the conclusion I came to after I wasted my time and money! You can read the review here. It basically reports that a study of 135 overweight people were researched. Half were given Garcinia Cambogia and the other half a placebo. They were all put on a low-calorie diet. There was no greater weight loss in the group taking the Garcinia Cambogia.
Unfortunately for most of us, we keep trying to find that one little thing that will melt our fat away WITHOUT having to change our lifestyle too much!
I think it’s really a no brainer. Real food, real nutrition with some form of exercise is really going to be the only way to lose weight. Real whole foods don’t come with such warnings! If children and pregnant women are not approved to consume such stuff why would the rest of us?
We do get seduced by the before and after pictures of such ‘success stories’. The fact is you can be a success story without taking this sort of stuff, wasting money and risking side effects!
