WHY WALKING IS ENOUGH EXERCISE

Walking is ENOUGH exercise to lose weight! There I said it! Are you one of those people who join the gym with great intentions and enthusiasm and then feel guilty when you don’t/won’t get there often enough? I think you should just cancel that membership, because after reading this, you will wonder whatever possessed you to sign up for it in the first place!

DON’T RUN!  WALK!!

Don’t run from starting a regular exercise regime, walk! I have read tons of stuff over the years on exercise and diet and losing weight. I have even practised most of the things I have learnt. The one thing I can tell you for a fact is that you HAVE TO  combine exercise with good eating to get any real results and keep them! But STOP!  This is not about developing a great regime, start walking, improve your fitness and move on to ‘real’ exercise. I mean, just walk! Nothing else required! Ever!

LAZY OR JUST SMART?

I am as lazy as they come sometimes and I would rather go to the dentist than the gym! I’m not joking! Though in recent years I haven’t been to either. The fabulous thing is I know I don’t have to join the gym or do fancy classes for weight loss results. In fact I lost 30 kilos with just walking! Need more convincing? Well here are reasons why walking is the only exercise you need to commit to forever!

29 Reasons Why Walking Is Enough!

1.NO FANCY EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

No yoga mats, balls, weights, bands! Arghhhh! The list goes on! Everything you need is attached to your ankles!

2. NO NEED TO ALLOW FOR NON EXERCISE TIME

Don’t you hate it when your gym junkie friend, co-worker or neighbour asks you ‘Can’t you fit in one hour of insert gym session type here 3 times a week?’ Well no actually I can’t, because I have to get kids to and from school, go to work , get dinner on, help kids with homework, spend time with hubby, ring my best friend etc etc. One hour of Zumba is actually more like 2 and half hours when I include travelling time and getting ready for it. I don’t care what people say about getting ready for the gym. You still have to brush your hair and your teeth and find gym clothes (you have to at least pretend to look the part).

3. IT’S FREE

Literally. You already own clothes and shoes.

4. CAN BE DONE ANYWHERE

Did you hear about the woman who was too embarrassed to walk in public so started walking around her backyard till she lost some weight? See? No excuses. Read about Karen Gatt here.

5. DOUBLES AS BONDING TIME

I have been known to drag my teenager out with me and she can actually take her eyes off that damn phone and talk to me whilst walking at the same time!

6. DOUBLES AS DATE NIGHT

Gotta be honest. This one works only occasionally for me. Hubby is not one to offer to walk with me but if I ask nicely and wink at him he relents. You get a chance to talk without interruptions and you’re not consuming calories either!

7. GET A GOOD PARK

This works for me, especially when picking kids up from school. As you know, it can be a total nightmare finding a good car park when you know it’s going to be packed. I get there an hour early and go for my walk! By the time I get back to the car, schools out and we drive home!

8. LOW IMPACT

We all know hard jarring is not good for your knees and ankles. None of that whilst you’re walking!

9. WEIGHT BEARING

To protect against osteoporosis you have to be doing weigh bearing exercise. Things like swimming and cycling don’t cut it.

10.  SAVE TIME

Make all those phone calls you need to make whilst you’re talking. You know, like ringing the friend you haven’t spoken to in ages or your mum. Maybe not work related calls. If you’re huffing and puffing you might have to explain exactly what you are doing.

11. LISTEN

Take the opportunity to listen to those podcasts, music, audio books you haven’t had the time to sit down and put on.

12. FRESH AIR

Most of the time we are cooped up in our houses or work places. Walking outdoors is a great way to get out and breathe some non recycled air!

13. WALK AND SHOP

This would have to be my favourite. I get to stroll around shopping centres and malls and I’m working out. Walking is walking!

14. STEPS ON A PEDOMETER

You can go get your mail from the letter box and it counts!

15. AVOID THE GYM

You don’t need a gym membership! Woohoo!

16. AVOID GETTING TOO HOT AND SWEATY

I just hate huffing and puffing and getting sweaty. Especially in summer.

17. ITS NATURAL

You reckon our ancestors did Zumba or spin classes? Everything else is just ‘processed exercise’. Paleo all the way! (almost).

18. DOESN’T PRODUCE CORTISOL

High intensity exercise triggers cortisol. This hormone is designed to help provide energy to the body in times of stress ie fight or flight responses. So unless you’re running away from a would be attacker, don’t bother. Also known to help make you fat!

19. YOU CAN TAKE THE LITTLE ONES

For kids you can’t leave at home unattended what do you think prams and tricycles are for. They might slow you down but walking is walking! Better yet get them a tricycle with a handle. I love seeing those. The kid actually thinks he’s the one in charge!

20. TAKE THE DOG/S

Try taking the dog to your next personal training/Zumba/aerobics class! They might slow you down as they sniff and pee every 5 minutes but walking is walking!

21. WATCH TV

If you watch any amount of TV, get a treadmill and do both at the same time. You don’t need anything fancy. I bought a basic ex Be Fit Hire treadmill for about $200 10 years ago and I still use it!

22. SAVE ON PETROL

When you only need a couple of items or just need to duck into the post office, just walk and save on petrol.

23. INCREASE SELF ESTEEM

Walking releases endorphins and you will feel great about yourself, especially knowing you have done something burning calories! Also you can secretly enjoy the wolf whistles and honks from passing motorists. Ok, it’s not politically correct that’s why I said ‘secretly’ and boys can’t help being idiots sometimes!

24. MAKE MONEY

Deliver catalogues while you’re walking and make some extra money. Ok, it wont make you rich but what other exercise can you do and get paid for it? Apart from actually becoming a gym instructor that is.

25. JUSTIFY WEARING ACTIVE WEAR!

I love my active wear and I don’t need a gym membership to own them and wear them every day. I work out every day just walking!

26. DOESN’T INCREASE APPETITE

Intense exercise has been known to increase your appetite so you end up eating twice as much! I’ve tried swimming and could eat a horse after a half hour session!

27. INCIDENTAL EXERCISE

I love this concept. When I’m at work I really don’t mind going somewhere twice or more, such as forgetting to grab something from a different department. Walking is walking! On the days I actually work I don’t need to do any extra walking. I have clocked up my 10000 steps by the end of the day. No guilt for me for not going to the gym before or after an exhausting shift at work.

28. GET TONED

Choose a hilly suburb to walk in and tone that butt and calf muscles! Easily done on a treadmill with an incline as well.

29. GET YOUR DOSE OF VITAMIN D

Back to osteoporosis prevention. Is the only sun you’re getting through the car window, driving to and from work? Go out and get some sunshine and smell the roses!

What exercise do you hate the most?  Do you know of any other exercise that has all these reasons going for it?

  1. Hi, this post sounds great. My favourite is walking and shopping. I might try that and hopefully I wont break the bank!

    1. I know what you mean Joanne! A trick I recommend is leaving the credit cards at home and just having minimal cash on you. That should prevent any major purchases!

  2. All of these are spot on! (Although I like the yoga mat, too.) Great post and really great points. I have a friend I walk with all the time and its the greatest therapy session ever!

  3. Love this post! I aim to walk for 30 minutes or so each day. I used to listen to music but now I listen to podcasts. I’ve fallen in love with podcasts so I make a deal with myself that I can’t listen to a podcast unless I’m out walking. Win, win. 😉

  4. Awesome post! I love the idea of getting to school early and walking for an hour, that’s just brilliant, school pickup is always a nightmare. I also love the idea of listening to podcasts as you walk. Thank you for sharing so many tips and tricks, you have me convinced 🙂

    1. I love the idea of making life easier AND getting exercise which is why getting to school early for pick up is my favourite too xx
