THE FACTS THAT WILL MAKE YOUR HAIR STAND ON END

 

Do you know all the facts about energy drinks? Especially if you are drinking them to lose weight?

 

There are many energy drinks available out there, and the common theory is that you can drink them as an energy boost, meal replacement and as an appetite suppressant. Throw in increased metabolism and it certainly sounds like you’re onto a winner.

 

Unfortunately it’s all just a little too good to be true.

 

The cons far outweigh the pros and I’m not actually sure there are any pros! I looked into a couple of the most popular ones. Those being redbull and monster and the facts definitely made my hair stand on end. You can read a little bit more about the research being done here.

 

DO ENERGY DRINKS GIVE YOU AN ENERGY BOOST?

 

The so called energy boost probably comes from the caffeine hit in these drinks. You drink one and before you know it you are buzzing around getting all your shit done. I’m definitely pro coffee and caffeine. Did you read my post about coffee and the benefits of caffeine? Read it here if you missed it.

Did you know though, that a regular cup of coffee has about 57 g of caffeine, whilst a monster energy drink has about 160!

Whilst coffee has some great health benefits, this much caffeine can definitely cause problems. These include, palpitations, jitteriness, insomnia, hypertension, and  anxiety! Why don’t you just make yourself a coffee with 3 teaspoons of coffee instead of one? Save yourself the money and bother!

 

The other way you probably get an energy boost is from the sugar. We all know sugary drinks are the worst thing you could be doing if you are trying to lose weight. Redbull try to justify the sugar content in their drink by comparing it to a fruit juice. It may have the same amount of sugar but I believe there are more nutrients in a glass of real fruit juice and it’s most definitely not going to have all that other crap in it, especially if you freshly squeeze it yourself.

Besides, if you’re actually trying to lose weight, it’s recommended you actually eat a real piece of fruit not juicing it. So for weight loss purposes stick to water! I’m hardly going to put a can of redbull on the same playing field as a glass of freshly squeezed fruit juice! Would you?

 

 

ENERGY DRINKS AS MEAL REPLACEMENTS

 

I can see how that would work.  You’re busy at work so you just grab an energy drink. It fills you up if you’re hungry, gives you that energy boost with the caffeine and you can just continue with your day. In fact if you have more than one you probably won’t feel like eating until much much later!

 

Come on! We all know meal replacements are not the answer, especially if we’re talking about energy drinks!! Who’s falling for this shit? How could they possibly replace a meal? You need HEALTHY meals, not this rubbish whether you’re trying to lose weight or not!

 

THE SHOCKING INGREDIENTS

Granted, redbull does contain b group vitamins. But I doubt that cancels out the sucralose and acesulfame K it contains in the no sugar version. Artificial sweetener has been shown to still cause the body to react as if it was real sugar. This means, insulin is still released which is the hormone that causes fat storage! The ‘zero’ version has all the same ingredients except they have added aspartame. Apparently that makes it ‘zero carb’ and ‘zero sugar’. That’s alright then (insert sarcasm here)

At least redbull name their ingredients on the website. The monster website (which has ‘girls’ as one of the menu items BTW) does not list any ingredients other than ‘it’s the ideal combo of the right ingredients in the right proportion to deliver the big bad buzz that only monster can’!

Well, I’m speechless. As it appears I had to get the info elsewhere. Monsters ingredients include the usual caffeine, taurine, glucose, and L carnitine. (You can read more about monster ingredients here.)  But here’s the full list;

carbonated water, natural flavors, sucrose, citric acid, Panax ginseng root extract, sodium citrate, inositol, color added, benzoic acid, sorbic acid, sucralose, guarana seed, cyanocobalamin, niacinamide, glucuronolactone, maltodextrin, sodium chloride, riboflavin and pyridoxine hydrochloride.

I don’t understand why you would want to put half that stuff in your body! You are literally better off having a coffee or even nothing for lunch than one of these drinks!

 

Apart from the fact that these drinks taste disgusting I don’t see what people see in them. If you want/need more energy, you’re going to find more harm than good in those cans. Get enough sleep, minimise the processed food you eat and get some daily exercise. It’s not rocket science really.

 

GREAT MARKETING

 

The marketing is definitely geared towards the ‘cool kids’ and clearly I don’t qualify.

According to Monster ‘athletes, musicians, anarchists, co-eds, road warriors, metal heads, geeks, hipsters, and bikers dig it.’ There must be enough of those buying this stuff for energy drinks to be so popular. If you fall in that category of people though, drink them knowing they are not the answer for your health or weight loss goals!

  1. Brilliant post! I have always been concerned with these drinks being approved for human consumption. Because they are approved/deemed ‘safe’ to drink and as you mentioned in your post are very cleverly marketed, people regularly drink them without knowing what’s in them. They are consumed with a false sense of security. Thanks for going into detail about the ingredients and the subsequent health impacts. I’m so pleased I never drink them. Another great post!

    1. I especially get concerned when they’re marketed to school kids! If they knew what these ingredients did to their bodies I dont think anyone would think they were ‘cool’!

  2. Thanks for the reminder of all the nasties in these drinks. I can’t stand energy drinks (or soft drinks for that matter). It’s not always about who is falling for these brands/products, but that there are many people who need the education and opportunity to make better choices. If people knew all the facts and about how/why to make better choices (easily), I think many would choose a healthier alternative. Thanks again, loved the post :).

  3. They are so bad for you, I know people drink them like they are water, to suppress their appetite or to get through the day. I havent been a fan of them or soda I’m more of a water and juice girl all the way and now into Kombucha
