3 THINGS I LEARNT GAINING WEIGHT AFTER LOSING IT.

HAS YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GONE UP IN SMOKE?

Have you been gaining weight after losing it?  It can be really difficult to lose weight, most of us know this.  It takes next to no effort to put on weight but trying to lose it is a different story. The effort requires changing habits, introducing or eliminating certain foods and finally the dreaded exercise that must go with this process.

So how do you feel after putting in a LOT of work for many months  and you reach your goal weight? Or something close? It makes all that effort really worth it, doesn’t it?  You stuck it out and really changed to achieve great results. And then? And then it all came back! Not overnight but gradually. Gaining weight after losing it can be very depressing and deflating! Before you know it your pants are tighter and tighter until you find yourself right back where you started!

Have you found your fabulous weight loss gone? Up in smoke? How does one handle this humiliating and embarrassing experience? Do you remember all the compliments you got as you lost all that weight? The new clothes you had to buy that made you look great, you hardly recognised yourself in the mirror? All gone! Now you can almost hear those whispers behind your back “can you believe she put all that weight back on” “all that effort was a waste of time”.

After I lost 30 kilos, someone asked me “ do you reckon you’d put that weight back on?” What a bitch I thought! But I answered ‘never, in a million years!” If ever there was a time to never say never that was it! It’s not like you can hide weight loss and then weight gain. You feel like shit and angry at yourself! You were right there! You had that magic number on the scales right in front of you! Why didn’t you protect that with your life!! It’s what you always wanted and now it’s up in smoke!

THE 3 THINGS I LEARNT GAINING WEIGHT AFTER LOSING IT

NUMBER 1

You could wallow in self-pity and continue gaining weight or you could really learn from this experience. The first thing I learnt gaining weight after losing it was once all the work had been done, that didn’t mean I could let my guard down and never need to worry about nutrition and exercise ever again! Somewhere in the back of my mind I was me telling myself “you’ve lost all this weight so you can eat more and move less!” Wrong Wrong Wrong! That’s what got me there in the first place, and guess what, doing the same things got me to the same weight! It’s really not rocket science! I’ve decided staying a healthy weight doesn’t come mentally naturally for me and it’s something I need to consciously be aware of all the time.

NUMBER 2

I also learnt, getting to a size 10 didn’t magically make life better! I’ve spent years thinking that was the answer to everything. Guess what? It wasn’t, so I mentally went back to doing what I did before. Not smart, but it’s very comfortable to sit in front of the tv eating m&ms and zoning out from other issues!

NUMBER 3

The third thing I learnt was I finally figured out how to actually lose weight. Catch up on my past post on how often to weigh yourself here.  After years of fluffing around losing a couple of kilos here and there I actually managed to lose 30! I only put it back on going back to old habits. So the good news is if I did it once, I can do it again! So if  I can do it so can you! So don’t bother feeling sorry for yourself, just start the process all over again! The time is going to pass anyway! And when you get there again, you will be able to figure out how to not regain it again. If you figure out the reasons YOU put the weight back on, you can figure out how NOT TO.

As they say you need to get right back on the horse after falling off! Good Luck!

Photo credit: bonusphotography via Visualhunt / CC BY     The common arguments for not drinking diet shakes are they’re not a realistic long-term solution and they don’t really teach you anything about nutrition and real health. All valid points. There are other reasons though,  you may not have come across which…

I'm a self confessed m&m addict (as you've probably already figured out!) and all round chocoholic. I love food, love to eat and generally blame my mother for all my weight issues! Read the post about my mother here! I have a day job, a husband, 2 kids, 4 step kids…

  1. Staying consistent and making your health and fitness a lifestyle change instead of a temporary diet is key! That’s why all of these “fad” diets don’t work. You may see progress but will it help you keep that progress?

    1. You’re right Tiffany. Getting there is only half the journey, then you have to make sure you stay there!

  2. I have to continue to tell myself being fit is a lifestyle change not a 6 week program. The good news is you already know what you can do to lose it again and with your positive attitude I don’t see that being an issue. 🙂

    1. That’s just it Faith, it is a lifestyle! Sometimes failing at something is what makes it sink in xx

  3. Great advice! Thank you!
