Fasting has many connotations but for now I would like to relate it to Lent. I also believe it might have some merit in our quest to lose weight!
If you come from a Christian background you have undoubtedly heard of it. Now don’t worry I’m not about to get all religious but here are some basic facts you might find interesting
⇒ Lent is a time where people abstain or fast from certain foods
⇒ This is traditionally the 40 days before Easter
⇒ The Orthodox church also observes it before Christmas
The purpose behind Lent and fasting is a way to spiritually connect with God/Jesus and to appreciate the sufferings He went through. It basically involves abstaining from meat, fish and dairy products throughout those forty days. Having said that there are exceptions when people eat fish and other seafood.
You would be correct in thinking this sounds a lot like a vegan or vegetarian diet. That’s exactly what it is. Unlike true veganism and vegetarianism, fasting during lent is a temporary diet during those 40 days.
SHOULD YOU TRY FASTING?
Not wanting to offend any religious people who take this very seriously, I think it’s worth trying just for it’s other benefits and not just for it’s religious meanings.
In my family for example, lent and fasting was a way of life every year. And every year us kids would moan and groan that we couldn’t have money for that hotdog at school that day!
If you come from a family where this is fairly common place, it might be a great time to try vegan and vegetarian meals!
You are more likely to have support from family and friends when you mention it’s Lent and you’re trying it seriously this year. I think it could be a great motivator to have that religious element in what you’re eating if religion has some part in your life. If you’ve never set foot in a church in your life and neither has your family, you might get some strange sideward glances. People will start to think you’re about to enter some cult that has this weird initiation process!
I come from a Greek family where eating everything in sight is the norm. Mention fasting for lent or communion though and everyone will stop forcing food on you! Other options include doctors orders because you are deathly allergic to something or on medication that is contraindicated with whatever food is on offer. Otherwise you risked offending your aunt, uncle, sister-in-law or the neighbour!
TRY FASTING FOR 40 DAYS!
Give it a go, you are bound to lose weight! Especially if it’s a real change from what you normally would eat. It could prove a really good ‘detox’ and kickstart some healthy eating!
I think doing Lent before Christmas is killing 2 birds with one stone as it’s summer. That is the usual time people want to overhaul a few bad eating habits! It’s also somewhat easier to eat lots of salads!
Ask your vegan and vegetarian friends for some tips! I have also found some great recipes here if you want to give them a go. I might try it this year, mum will be impressed!
